How I came to work for ES3? I was living in Calgary at the time and looking for that next challenge, when I was referred to Darrell by a previous co-worker. We had some discussions by phone and then I flew out to Vancouver to meet with the team.

I came in expecting a typical stuffy broker’s office and instead found a bright yellow office with laughter bellowing out to the hallway! That day I had interviews, did some role playing scenarios and had an hour-long meeting with an industrial psychologist. I got sick on my way back home (some would say from the rigours of the day, while others would chalk it up to flight sickness. I bet on the latter and decided to take the position!).

My role here is to run the Employee Strategies component of ES3 (which specializes in employee benefits). I’m fortunate to be able to align this with my passion for wellness (I’m a Life Coach as well). When I joined this industry, I noticed two trends: the first was that prescription drug and disability costs were rising at unsustainable rates. I also saw that over 80% of family doctor visits were due to stress-related conditions. I had a true “a-ha” moment at that point: I would use my life coaching experience to complement my employee benefits advisory! That way, I could take a very holistic approach with my clients, helping them figure out how to REALLY reduce their costs over the long term, while also creating an environment where employees would thrive. Bringing this element of tangible wellness to our clients has definitely been a win-win – a great evolution for our industry and a significant cost reducer for all parties!
